Nestled along the lush banks of the Pomeroon River, my community is rich in culture and natural beauty, with the surrounding rainforest offering an impressive 23 hectares of forest area per person—a testament to our rich biodiversity. Here, we cherish our connection to the land and the river, which sustain our livelihoods and traditions.
As a resident of this vibrant area, I am deeply connected to our local customs, especially our culinary delights. Whether it's savoring a plate of pepper pot during the holidays or indulging in a bowl of metemgee on a lazy Sunday, food is a profound part of our identity. Additionally, I take pride in our diverse heritage, which blends Indigenous, African, Indian, and European influences. This cultural mosaic is reflected in our music and celebrations, like Mashramani, where we come together to embrace our unique Guyanese identity.
Having witnessed the exciting developments in our country, especially with the discovery of oil, I often think about how this will shape our future. With a growing diaspora, I feel a strong sense of connection with Guyanese around the world, celebrating our achievements and sharing our stories.
