Hello! I’m Kumar Mattai, a proud labourer residing in the scenic Coast MC Nabb Lima Sands in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Growing up amidst the lush landscapes and vibrant communities of Guyana, I’ve always appreciated the rich cultural heritage that shapes our everyday lives. From the bustling markets of Georgetown, where I often reminisce about my time there, to the serene banks of the Pomeroon River, where the spirit of community truly comes alive, my roots run deep in this beautiful land.
In my work, I embrace the same values that permeate our culture—hard work, resilience, and a strong sense of togetherness. I enjoy sharing stories about local traditions, whether it’s the communal gatherings where everyone participates in music and dance or the culinary delights of our cuisine, like pepperpot or cook-up rice, which bring families and friends together around the table. As noted by many who’ve visited our shores, like Richard Johansson, the warmth of our people and the authenticity of our experiences shine through, making each encounter memorable.
As part of the diaspora, I cherish connecting with fellow Guyanese, whether they’re near or far. I find joy in the shared understanding of our culture, such as calling strangers 'uncle' or 'aunty', reminiscent of traditions from India. It's these little nuances that remind us of our unique identity. I look forward to continued conversations, sharing our stories, and celebrating the spirit of Guyana with everyone I meet!
