Hello! My name is Lesley Edwards, and I’m proud to call Mission in Pomeroon-Supenaam my home. As a labourer, I engage in the hard work that keeps our community thriving, whether it’s tending to the lush rice fields or helping with the local fishing industry. Guyana’s rich natural resources and vibrant landscapes inspire me daily. Here, the Essequibo River flows gracefully, reminding us of our deep ties to the land and our ancestors.
Growing up in Guyana, I was surrounded by the aromas of traditional dishes like pepperpot and cook-up rice, which reflect our diverse heritage—from our Indigenous roots to the influences of our African, Indian, and Portuguese communities. It’s not just food; it’s a celebration of our culture, often shared during family gatherings or festive occasions. I love connecting with others, whether it's over a plate of fried fish at a local rum shop or sharing stories about our colorful festivals like Mashramani, which brings our community together in a joyous display of music and dance.
As someone deeply connected to my homeland, I understand the importance of maintaining our cultural ties even while living in the diaspora. Guyana may be often asked if it's in South America or the Caribbean, but no matter where I go, I carry the spirit of our nation with me. Whether I’m engaging with fellow Guyanese abroad or sharing our stories with others, I am proud to represent our beautiful country and its people.
Pomeroon-Supenaam lies on the Atlantic coast northwest of Georgetown. Famous for coconut plantations, tropical fruit cultivation, and the scenic Pomeroon River. Anna Regina serves as the regional capital.
