Greetings! I’m Melanie Mc Calman, a dedicated teacher from the beautiful West Bank Demerara, specifically from Inner Bagotsville. Growing up amidst the lush landscapes and vibrant cultures of Guyana, I have always been passionate about nurturing the minds of our youth and sharing the rich heritage of our nation. Whether it's introducing my students to the flavors of pepperpot or the sweet delight of guyanese black cake, I strive to instill a sense of pride in our local traditions.
Guyana is often overlooked in conversations about the Caribbean, but it holds a unique charm that’s hard to resist. From the breathtaking Kaieteur Falls to the bustling markets of Georgetown, there's a world of experiences waiting to be shared. I often hear comments from those who don't know where Guyana is or think of us as "uncivilized," but I take every opportunity to educate them about our vibrant culture, diverse communities, and the kindness of our people. Our diaspora is strong, and I love connecting with fellow Guyanese across the world who carry a piece of home with them wherever they go.
When I’m not in the classroom, you’ll find me enjoying a good conversation over some roti and curry with friends, exploring the rivers and forests that define our land, or engaging with the diaspora community online. It's all about fostering connections, whether here at home or abroad, and celebrating the spirit of being Guyanese!
