Hello! I’m Michael, a proud Guyanese miner based in the serene surroundings of River Saxacalli Essequibo in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. Growing up in this lush, vibrant part of Guyana, I’ve always been surrounded by the rich sounds and smells of our culture—from the sizzle of fried plantains to the sweet aroma of fresh black cake during our festive seasons. As a child, I often played along the banks of the Essequibo River, a crucial part of my community's life, and now, as an adult, I see the same beauty reflected in the resilience of our people.
Guyana, often overlooked by many in South America, holds a special place in my heart. Although we are geographically isolated by dense tropical bush, our spirit is undeniably Caribbean. I take pride in sharing our traditions and flavors with my fellow Guyanese and the world. From the hustle of Georgetown, the "Garden City of the Caribbean," to the peaceful rhythms of the Pomeroon region, there’s a story in every corner. It’s this connection to my homeland and to my diaspora community that drives me to promote our culture and engage with those who might not yet know the wonders of Guyana.
Though our nation has faced challenges, including perceptions of being a "third world" country, we continue to rise above. In my role as a miner, I not only contribute to the economy but also to the preservation of our heritage. Whether it’s participating in community events or sharing a meal of pepperpot with friends, I cherish every opportunity to connect with my roots and remind others that Guyana is more than just a dot on the map—it’s where my heart lies.
