Growing up in the vibrant community of 23 Market Dam, Zorg, I have always been deeply connected to the rich culture and traditions of Guyana. As a captain navigating the waters of our beloved rivers, I cherish the beauty of our landscapes—from the lush greenery to the serene flows of the Pomeroon River. There's nothing quite like a Sunday afternoon fish fry with family and friends, savoring fresh catch alongside some spicy pepperpot and rice.
Living in a country that is now witnessing an exciting transformation fueled by new opportunities, such as the recent oil boom, fills me with pride. I have witnessed the love and kinship amongst the diverse communities here—where black and brown friendships flourish, creating a unique social fabric that defines our nation. Whether reminiscing about local spots like Charles Fried Chicken in Harlem or sharing stories from my childhood in Guyana, I find that my roots always guide me back home, even while abroad.
For me, being a part of the Guyanese diaspora means carrying a piece of my homeland wherever I go. It's about celebrating our shared heritage and the simple joys of life—like enjoying a hearty plate of cook-up rice after a long day. Whether I’m navigating the waterways or connecting with fellow Guyanese around the world, I always carry the warmth of our culture in my heart, ready to share it with anyone who wants to know the beauty of our land.
