Based in the serene surroundings of Capoey Compound on the Essequibo Coast, I, Rohan Narine, have dedicated my life to the rice milling industry, a cornerstone of our local economy and heritage. Growing up in Guyana, I've witnessed firsthand the challenges our communities face, from the widening gap between the haves and have-nots to the looming threat of heavy rains that can flood our beautiful landscapes. Yet, amidst these challenges, there is a strength in our people and a connection to our roots that reminds us of the vibrant life we cherish.
My passion extends beyond rice; it's deeply intertwined with our flavorful culinary traditions. There’s nothing quite like the joy of enjoying a plate of dhal pourie paired with succulent goat or beef curry, drizzled with spicy pepper sauce. The flavors evoke memories of family gatherings, where laughter fills the air, and we share stories of our heritage and dreams for the future, just as those in the diaspora do when reminiscing about home. Our rich culture, from the bustling markets to the tranquil backyards filled with chickens and ducks, is what keeps us connected no matter where we are in the world.
