Hello! I’m Sharda Sookram, a proud resident of Essequibo, specifically from 42A Block 8 New Housing in Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up in Guyana, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for our vibrant culture, rich biodiversity, and the warmth of our tight-knit communities. As someone who values the importance of acknowledging our heritage, I often find myself correcting those who mistakenly place Guyana in the Caribbean category. We are a unique South American nation with a blend of Indigenous, African, Indian, and European influences that makes our culture truly one-of-a-kind. The diversity of our people is reflected in our delicious cuisine, whether it’s savoring a spicy pepperpot or enjoying a sweet slice of coconut cake during celebrations.
Through my journey, I’ve also connected with the Guyanese diaspora, who share stories of their homeland, from the shores of Shell Beach to the bustling streets of Georgetown.
