Hello! I’m Shevon Abrams, a proud resident of the Essequibo Coast, specifically from Cow Dam Mocha in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region. My roots run deep in this vibrant land, where the lush landscapes meet the rich culture that defines our way of life. Growing up here, I’ve been surrounded by the warmth of our community and the beauty of our natural surroundings, from the serene banks of the Pomeroon River to the bustling markets filled with local delicacies.
Food is a centerpiece of our culture, and I can’t resist a good plate of dhal puri, ideally enjoyed with company because, as we say, “you shouldn’t eat alone if you’re Caribbean!” My fondness for our traditional dishes goes hand-in-hand with the stories they tell and the connections they foster. Whether it’s sharing a meal with family or friends or reminiscing about life in Guyana with fellow diaspora members abroad, each bite is a taste of home.
In my daily life, I embrace the essence of our cultural identity, which embodies the blend of influences that make Guyana unique. Though some may view us as simply part of South America, we hold tightly to our Caribbean spirit, embodying a rich heritage that transcends borders.
