Greetings! My name is Avianash Persaud, and I proudly hail from the vibrant Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. Nestled in the heart of the lush Pomeroon River, this area is known for its rich agricultural heritage and the warmth of its people. Growing up, I spent countless afternoons savoring the delightful flavors of our local cuisine, from aromatic curry dishes to the sweet delight of pepperpot. It's no wonder that I often say, "you should call all the dishes you mentioned... Indian," as our culinary scene is a beautiful blend of influences that reflect our diverse culture.
Having made my way to Singapore, I carry with me the essence of home. The gentle flow of the Pomeroon River is matched only by the river of memories I have, from visiting the majestic Kaieteur Falls (which we fondly pronounce as "kai-chore") to the lively celebrations of Mashramani. I find joy in connecting with fellow Guyanese in the diaspora, as we reminisce about our shared experiences and navigate life abroad. As one community member stated, "Bobby Knuckles now this I agree with! But we all know Guyana isn't Caribbean but it has Caribbean ties!" This sentiment resonates deeply, as it emphasizes our unique identity while embracing our Caribbean roots.
As I settle into my new life in Singapore, I remain committed to celebrating my heritage. Whether through sharing traditional dishes with friends or engaging in conversations about our homeland, I strive to be an ambassador of Guyanese culture. The stories, flavors, and traditions of Guyana are a vital part of who I am, and I look forward to representing my beautiful nation wherever I go.
