Hello! I’m Cleveland Francis, a dedicated labourer based in Essequibo at the beautiful Capoey Lake. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes of the Pomeroon-Supenaam region, I’ve developed a profound appreciation for the natural wonders that make Guyana so special. From the enchanting manatees that glide through our waters—often likened to Pokémon by those who marvel at them—to the vibrant flora and fauna that thrive in our rainforests, I hold my homeland close to my heart.
Food is a big part of our culture, and there’s nothing quite like a hearty plate of pepperpot or a refreshing bowl of cook-up rice to bring people together. Even though our country might face challenges—like the ones mentioned by friends in the diaspora—I believe in showcasing the progress and resilience of our people. Whether it’s through sharing stories of our local markets or the lively celebrations of Mashramani, there’s so much pride in being Guyanese that I carry with me wherever I go.
As I continue to work and connect with others, I cherish the bonds formed within our diaspora. Even those who have ventured far from home, like my friends in New York, still find joy in reminiscing about the unique experiences we share.
