Hello! I’m Maurice Smith, a proud farmer from the scenic Lower Pom River on Massarie Island, situated in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. My roots run deep in this land, a place where the lush greenery meets the gentle flow of the river. Growing up surrounded by the rich cultural tapestry of the Amerindian and Indo-Guyanese communities, I’ve come to appreciate the vibrant traditions, music, and culinary delights that make our country unique. From the taste of pepperpot at Christmas to the sound of tassa drums at local festivities, each experience has shaped my identity.
As a farmer, I cultivate a variety of crops, and I take great pride in contributing to my community’s food security. It’s not just about the produce; it’s about the relationships we build with our neighbors and the connections we maintain with Guyanese people abroad. Many of us share stories of resilience and perseverance, echoing the collective history of our ancestors who faced oppression, including the harsh legacies of colonialism.
