Hello! I’m Maylene Williams, a proud farmer from the scenic Pom River in Siriki, located in the vibrant Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. My life revolves around the rich landscapes of our country, where the fertile soil nourishes not just crops but also the spirit of our community. Growing up in this beautiful environment, I’ve always been inspired by the resilience and enterprising nature of my fellow Guyanese. We truly embody the saying, “Out of the frying pan & into the fire,” as we continuously adapt and thrive amidst challenges.
As a farmer, I take immense pride in cultivating local produce, including delicious fruits and vegetables that reflect our diverse culinary heritage. Whether it’s the flavorful pepperpot that brings families together or the fresh fish from our rivers, I believe that food is a powerful way to connect with one another and celebrate our culture. I often share my experiences with the diaspora, and it warms my heart to see interest growing for our traditions and cuisine. Many have expressed a desire to return home, with comments like, "The food looks delicious, definitely am going to make my way out there," filling me with hope for greater connections.
In my region, we’re also witnessing development, such as the new Demerara Harbor Bridge, which opens up opportunities for trade and tourism. It shows how, when we come together, we can uplift our communities and future generations.
