Greetings! My name is Ramchand Sammy, and I proudly call Essequibo 32 Block 20 North in Pomeroon-Supenaam my home. As a lifelong farmer, I've cultivated not only the rich soil of Guyana but also a deep appreciation for our vibrant culture and heritage. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes of the Essequibo region, I’ve learned the value of hard work and community, often sharing hearty meals with neighbors that include our renowned pepperpot and fresh catch from the rivers. Just like the diverse names of our local places, reflecting our Dutch colonial history, my roots run deep in this land.
My experiences have shown me that Guyana and its diaspora, whether in Australia or beyond, share a special bond. Many of us reminisce about the flavorful street food events back home or the vibrant celebrations that echo our ancestral ties. As noted by others, “Guyana/Ghana, same people, different continent,” reminds me that no matter where we are, our culture is always a part of us. The laughter and camaraderie we share, even from afar, make the distance feel a bit shorter.
As I continue my journey on the farm, I remain committed to contributing to our community, ensuring that we preserve not just our agricultural practices but also the spirit of togetherness that makes Guyana special. Whether it’s tilling the land or sharing stories about our cultural connections, I am here to foster a sense of pride in our heritage and look forward to connecting with fellow Guyanese, wherever they may be in the world.
