Hello! I'm Rizwaan Abdool, a proud fisherman hailing from the lush landscapes of Jacklow Upper Pom in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region of Guyana. My life revolves around the serene waters of the Pomeroon River, where I spend my days casting nets and sharing stories with fellow fishermen. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of reeling in a fresh catch, especially when it leads to a delicious meal of fried fish and rice accompanied by a spicy pepper sauce—a staple in our Guyanese cuisine!
Growing up in this vibrant community, I’ve forged strong connections with my neighbors and friends, many of whom have settled around the Upper Pom River, like Cocorite and Karawab. We often gather to reminisce about our roots and the rich culture we share, from the sweet sounds of local music to the festive celebrations that bring us together. I often think about those in the diaspora who carry our traditions with them, whether they’re enjoying a meal of labba or reminiscing about our beautiful landscapes like Massarie Island.
As I continue my journey as a fisherman, I remain deeply connected to my heritage and the natural beauty of Guyana. Whether it’s the sunrise casting a golden hue over the Pomeroon River or the laughter shared around a pot of cook-up rice, I cherish these moments. Through my work and community, I aim to honor the spirit of our land and the resilience of our people.
