Hello! I’m Sonia Henry-Brumme, a proud Guyanese teacher from the beautiful town of Regina Essequibo Coast, nestled along the lush Pomeroon-Supenaam region. Growing up surrounded by the rich culture of our land, I learned to appreciate our unique blend of traditions, from the vibrant festivals celebrating Mashramani to the comforting tastes of pepperpot and roti, which bring our communities together during family gatherings and special occasions.
My passion for education is deeply rooted in the belief that knowledge can uplift and empower our youth. In my classroom, I strive to instill a sense of pride in my students about their heritage, encouraging them to connect with our history and embrace the values of unity and respect that we hold dear as Guyanese. We’re a resilient people, known for our warmth and hospitality, and I believe that teaching is a powerful tool to foster understanding and cooperation among our diverse communities.
Though I now reside in Canada, I carry with me the spirit of our motto, “One People, One Nation, Destiny.” I cherish the connections I’ve made within the diaspora, and I often reminisce about the lush landscapes of Essequibo and the lively conversations shared over a plate of cook-up rice. Together, let’s celebrate our heritage and work towards a brighter future for all Guyanese, no matter where we are in the world.
