Hello! I’m Celia Jacobus-Persa, a dedicated teacher residing in River Pickers Gill, located in the vibrant Upper Pomeroon region of Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up surrounded by the lush landscapes, rich rivers, and the warm embrace of my community, I have developed a deep appreciation for the cultural mosaic that defines Guyana. From the rhythm of our traditional dances to the delicious aroma of pepperpot and cook-up rice wafting through our homes, I cherish the experiences that make our heritage unique.
As an educator, my passion lies not only in imparting knowledge but also in nurturing a love for our local culture among my students. I believe it’s crucial for the younger generation to connect with their roots and understand the importance of our diverse history, especially in light of contemporary challenges such as migration and the need for systemic change in our education and healthcare sectors. I often encourage my students to engage in meaningful discussions about current events, such as the issues faced by our teachers and nurses, and the stories of resilience that emerge from our communities.
When I'm not in the classroom, you can find me exploring the winding rivers or participating in local festivals that celebrate our vibrant Creole language and customs. My heart remains intertwined with the diaspora, as I understand the struggles many face when seeking opportunities abroad. I hope to inspire my students to embrace their identities while striving to create a brighter future for Guyana—one where everyone, regardless of their ethnic background, can thrive and contribute to our beautiful country.
