Hello! My name is Elroy Austin, and I proudly call Kairako in the Barima-Waini region of Guyana my home. As a miner, I’ve dedicated much of my life to working in the beautiful yet challenging landscapes of our country, where the lush greenery meets the rich bounty of our earth. Growing up in this vibrant community, I have always been inspired by the resilience and spirit of my fellow Guyanese, particularly those from the Lower Pomeroon and River Jamaica settlements, where we share stories, laughter, and a love for our cultural roots.
The aroma of traditional dishes like pepperpot and rice, coupled with the warmth of gatherings where we enjoy cassava bread and fresh fish, truly defines my experience. I cherish the connections with my family and friends, who reflect the diversity of our nation, from the indigenous peoples to the descendants of indentured laborers who have all made Guyana their home. Our conversations often drift to the rivers and lands that we hold dear, like the River Borahara and the Pomeroon, and I feel a strong sense of pride in our shared heritage and history.
As I navigate my journey within the diaspora community, I remain committed to bridging the gap between our homeland and the world.
