Greetings! I am Serene Brown-Bess, a dedicated teacher hailing from the vibrant Pomeroon region of Guyana, specifically Pomeroon-Supenaam. Growing up surrounded by the lush beauty of our local landscapes, from the rich waters of the Pomeroon River to the bustling markets filled with fresh produce and aromatic spices, I’ve developed a deep love for my culture and the unique experiences it offers. My roots run deep in our diverse society where East Indian, African, and Indigenous cultures blend beautifully, and I strive to instill this appreciation in my students every day.
In my classroom, I share stories and lessons that celebrate our heritage, including the delectable cuisine that makes Guyana special, like pepperpot and roti, which evoke memories of family gatherings and community celebrations. I believe in the importance of connecting with our diaspora, recognizing that whether one is in the heart of Georgetown or across oceans, our shared experiences and love for our homeland bind us together. As we explore what it means to be Guyanese, I encourage my students to carry forward our traditions while embracing the world around them.
